Support Us
Your donation helps us spread awareness of who Sikhs are. We are teaching Sikhs and non-Sikhs alike about our history, culture and egalitarian values.
Your donations pay for building and maintaining this website.
Your donations also go towards creating classes for our free online school.
Your higher level donations will allow us to rent studio space to shoot and edit video classes.
Highest level donations will allow us to build our own video shooting studio. Then we can invite well known Sikh writers and scholars and record them as they share their knowledge with the whole world.
Explanation of Sikh terms in our Donation form:
On the donation form we decided it would be fun to add some Punjabi phrases referring to Sikh philosophy to the different amounts. Punjabi is the language of the region in India where Sikhism was founded.
If you happen to be one of the many visitors to our site who is not familiar with the Punjabi language, please don’t let these terms intimidate you. We have provided the translations below.
It is not necessary to know the meanings of these phrases before making a donation. But reading the translations does provide a chance to learn a little bit more about the amazingly altruistic values that underpin Sikhism.
Matha Taykna:
When people enter a Gurdwara (Sikh temple) they first go and bow to the Granth Sahib (holy book of the Sikhs), followed immediately by the placement of a small cash donation into a collection box. This entree ritual is called “Matha Taykna”. (ਮੱਥਾ ਟੇਕਨਾ)
Level 1 Donations go towards building and maintenance of this website.
Sikhi Daan:
“Daan” (ਦਾਨ) is the Punjabi word for “giving”, while “Sikhi” (ਸਿੱਖੀ) is the term used by Sikhs to refer to the teachings of their Gurus. So “Sikhi Daan” means donating to help spread the word of Sikhism.
Level 2 Donations go towards adding fresh content and photography to this website.
Naam Japo, Kirat Karo, Vand Chakko:
The holy book of Sikhs is a book of poetry, so it is not surprising that many of the teachings expressed within its pages are spoken in rhyming terms. These 3 rhyming phrases, usually spoken together, are called the 3 pillars of Sikhism.
“Naam Japo” (ਨਾਮ ਜਪੋ) instructs us to meditate on the name of God. (Naam = name, Japo = repeat or chant).
”Kirat Karo” (ਕਿਰਤ ਕਰੋ) asks us to work honestly, and refrain from engaging in exploitation or deceitfulness. (Kirat = honest work, Karo = do, or engage in)
“Vand Chakko” (ਵੰਡ ਛਕੋ) means share with others the fruits of our labor, or live with generosity. (Vand = together, Chakko = consume).
Levels 3 through 5 help pay for the research and creation of lessons for the online free Sunday School.
Sangat Seva:
Engaging in service to community is a major part of Sikh identity. “Sangat” (ਸੰਗਤ) means community or congregation. “Seva” (ਸੇਵਾ) is the Punjabi word for service.
Level 6 Donations go towards renting a video shooting studio to create video based lessons for the online school.
Sarbat Da Bhala:
This is the closing line of a Sikh prayer called “Ardas” which is recited every morning and evening. It translates to “I pray for prosperity and wellness for everyone”. It expresses the Sikh ideal of choosing success and wellness for everyone around you, instead of thinking of only your own self. (Sarbat = all, Da =of, Bhala = wellness or prosperity). (ਸਰਬੱਤ ਦਾ ਭਲਾ).
Level 7 Donations will help us build our own video shooting studio and editing station so we can create lessons for our online school, as well as invite well known Sikh scholars and writers to share their pearls of wisdom with us.
